On this Coromandel Photography Workshop 2027 we base ourselves in idyllic Whitianga, where we are well positioned to photograph some of the highlights of the Coromandel. With Hahei a little way to the south and stunning beaches of the Kuaotunu region just to the north there is a strong focus on beach and coastal photography. However we also photograph Kauri forest, waterfalls and more on this workshop.
Our weekend mini-tours are designed to be an immersive hands on experience where we pack in practical time photographing in some of New Zealand’s best locations.
This is a weekend workshop which focuses on getting you to the right locations at the right time to capture amazing photographs from around the Coromandel.
This workshop is designed for photographers of all levels, from keen enthusiasts through to those with more experience. It suits those who want to refine how they see, compose, and work with light in the field, in some of the most amazing scenery anywhere. Days generally start early and time is spent on location. The emphasis is on thoughtful photography, working scenes as conditions change, and coming away with a strong set of images and a clearer photographic approach.
The east coast of the Coromandel offers an amazing amount of opportunities for landscape photography and we will pack in much of it. We are based amongst some of the regions best beaches so a focus of this workshop is on long-exposure photography of this stunning coastline.
Days start before dawn and often run through until after sunset, taking full advantage of the best light of the day. Locations are not rushed. Time is deliberately built in so we can work a scene properly, refine compositions, and leave knowing you’ve captured the images you came for.
Many of the locations we visit are quiet and remote, and it’s common to be the only people there. During the middle of the day there is time to rest, review images, and plan for the next location.
The workshops place a strong emphasis on learning through doing. At each location we work through composition, light, camera settings, and technique, so you develop a clear approach to photographing landscapes.
Post-processing sessions using Lightroom and Photoshop are also included, focusing on a clear, repeatable workflow and showing you how to turn your raw files into strong finished images that reflect the conditions and experience of being there.
This tour begins and finishes in Whitianga
We meet at our hotel in Whitianga at lunchtime on Friday. After introductions we will have a debrief of the weekend ahead, including running through equipment (camera’s, lenses, filters etc), weather conditions and answer any questions.
We then get right into it and set off for our first photography session.
The precise order of locations we visit is determined by the conditions – we allow for flexibility in our schedule and aim to be in the best locations at the right time. We have learnt that sometimes the best photographs are captured when you ‘follow the light’.
Our finish time on Sunday afternoon is a little flexible as some people decide to set off home earlier. We will have a debrief and aim to finish the workshop by 4 pm on allowing everyone to make their way home.
