What’s the Difference Between a Photography Workshop and a Photography Tour?

New Zealand Photography Workshops focus on learning and refining your craft within a concentrated geographic area—typically over 2 nights / 3 days. These workshops pack a lot into a balanced schedule that combines in-the-field shooting time, and dedicated sessions on Lightroom post-processing, editing workflows, and preparing images for print. Workshops stay based in one region (e.g., the Taranaki or Rotorua region), making them ideal for beginners or photography enthusiasts seeking to build confidence and develop their skills.

New Zealand Photography Tours are longer adventures, typically spanning 5 to 9 nights, with a focus on visiting multiple regions where we capture expansive landscapes as well as off-the-beaten track locations. Post-processing and image critique sessions are also included; however tours prioritise capturing large-scale images in multiple landscapes. Tours suit photographers ready to immerse themselves in an inspiring photography journey.

Many participants begin their journey with a workshop and then choose to join a longer photography tour to further explore and capture New Zealand’s stunning and diverse landscapes.

What to expect on your New Zealand Photography Workshop

Our New Zealand landscape photography workshops offer a well-rounded experience that blends hands-on field photography with practical post-processing training for a complete learning journey. Our goal is to maximise your time in the field, capturing dramatic scenery and learning real-world techniques to work with light, weather, and composition as it unfolds.

Alongside the fieldwork, we include compact Lightroom post-processing sessions where we work with the RAW files we have created. These sessions are designed to give you the confidence to edit, organise, and prepare your images for print or sharing — ensuring your photos look as striking on screen or paper as they did in person.

By combining practical experience with professional editing guidance, our New Zealand landscape photography workshops deliver a complete landscape photography learning experience.

Typical Photography Workshop schedule

We meet at the hotel at midday. Once settled in, we begin with a classroom session covering essential camera settings and planning techniques using helpful photography apps. In the afternoon, we head out for a field shoot to capture golden hour light at an iconic location. The day wraps up with dinner and a group discussion reviewing the day’s images and shared experiences.

We start early the next morning with a sunrise shoot to capture the dawn light at carefully chosen locations. Mid-morning is dedicated to a post-processing session, where we dive into editing techniques to enhance your images. The afternoon and evening are reserved for additional field shooting to take advantage of golden hour and sunset light, followed again by group dinner allowing discussion and review of the day’s photography.

The following morning we are on location again with another sunrise / dawn shoot. This is followed by a final mid-morning processing and image review session.

Workshops conclude in the early afternoon to allow for travel home.

Note: This typical schedule is designed to provide a general sense of the workshop flow, but every day can be adjusted to best suit weather conditions and the group’s learning goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level of photography experience do I need to join a workshop?

Our workshops are designed for enthusiasts and intermediate photographers who are comfortable with their camera basics. Whether you’re looking to strengthen your skills or explore creative techniques, you’ll find the pace supportive and tailored to your growth.

What kind of camera gear should I bring?

A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls is ideal. Bring a sturdy tripod and lenses you’re comfortable working with. Before the workshop, you’ll receive a detailed gear checklist and tips to help you prepare.

Do the workshops include post-processing lessons?

Yes! We dedicate time to post-processing sessions covering Lightroom fundamentals, editing workflows, and preparing images for print. These sessions help you bring out the best in your photos after shooting.

How physically demanding are the workshops?

Most days involve light walking (1–3 km) on easy to moderate terrain. The pace is relaxed to ensure you enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or exhausted. If you have mobility concerns, please get in touch to discuss suitability.

What happens if the weather is bad during a workshop?

New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, but often it creates dramatic and inspiring photo opportunities. We adapt our plans accordingly and have backup locations and indoor sessions such as editing or technique discussions.

Can beginners join the workshops?

Absolutely. Many participants start with little formal training. Our workshops provide a welcoming environment to build your confidence and learn foundational skills.
