Captivating Photography Journal Interview

I was recently featured in a Captivating Photography Journal interview titled From Exploration to Expression. It’s always a privilege to share thoughts about photography in New Zealand — especially around how creativity, patience, and connection with the land can transform the way we see and photograph the world around us.

In the interview, we discussed how photography isn’t just about finding the right composition — it’s about slowing down, responding to light, and allowing the landscape to shape your expression.

Excerpt from the Article

Through Richard Hume Photo Tours you guide others across New Zealand. What do you find most rewarding about this?

“My tours are aimed at landscape photography enthusiasts, from those who have just recently stepped into it to more seasoned photographers. These are multi-day experiences that allow us to leave the outside world behind and immerse ourselves in a focused, creative time amid some of New Zealand’s most stunning scenery. Beyond capturing great photographs, I aim to give each participant something special to take away, whether that’s a new technical skill, increased confidence, or a renewed passion for their own creativity.
There are many aspects I find rewarding. There’s something really special about the group dynamics that develop when people share such a creative experience. At the end of a shoot, perhaps enjoying a well-earned coffee after an early start in an incredible location, there’s a real sense of achievement and even a little adrenaline from being out there in the landscape, fully present. But the greatest reward comes when a participant reflects on the journey as a whole and shares what it has meant to them. Experiencing the combination of grand, sweeping scenes alongside off-the-beaten-track walks through pristine forest, all at quiet times when nature is at her best, is both inspiring and restorative. That sense of connection to the land, and the creative spark it ignites, is what makes guiding these tours so deeply fulfilling.”

About the Feature

The Captivating Photography Journal article explores the process of creating a new image from exploration — being curious and open in the landscape — to expression — communicating what that moment felt like through your image.

It also touches on the philosophy behind my tours: small groups, immersive experiences, and a focus on creativity and connection rather than ticking off locations.

Closing Thoughts

It was great being featured in Captivating Photography Journal, and I’m grateful for the chance to share a little of what drives my work. If you’re interested in exploring these ideas in person, I’d love to have you join me on one of my upcoming New Zealand photography tours — where we put these principles into practice in the field.
